O <strong>fluxo de materiais<\/strong>, desenhado na linha inferior, mostra a sequ\u00eancia f\u00edsica: processos, estoques intermedi\u00e1rios, fornecedores e clientes. O <strong>fluxo de informa\u00e7\u00f5es<\/strong>, na linha superior, mostra como pedidos, ordens de produ\u00e7\u00e3o e sistemas de controle conversam entre \u00e1reas. No rodap\u00e9, uma timeline em zigue-zague separa o tempo que agrega valor do tempo em espera, revelando o indicador mais cruel do lean: em manufatura discreta t\u00edpica, menos de 5% do lead time \u00e9, de fato, valor. O restante \u00e9 estoque parado em fila.<\/p>\n\n<p>Esse contraste reorienta a conversa dentro da empresa: l\u00edderes param de debater produtividade esta\u00e7\u00e3o a esta\u00e7\u00e3o e passam a enxergar o fluxo inteiro; equipes param de otimizar processos isolados e passam a priorizar o que mais impacta o cliente final. O termo &#8220;value stream mapping&#8221; foi cunhado por Mike Rother e John Shook em 1998, enquanto James Womack e Daniel Jones popularizaram o conceito de &#8220;value stream&#8221; em &#8220;Lean Thinking&#8221; (1996).
